Your students will love meeting and working with students from other countries as they collaborate on a meaningful project. Any content standard can be taught through this theme, and we have lots of ideas to help you - from unit outcomes, to projects, resources and activities of all kinds.

Younger students love to garden, cook, eat, learn about the supermarket, nutrition, fitness and nature. They can go a long way toward developing financial and media literacy as well as ecoliteracy.

Older students may examine McDonaldization, Coca-Colanization, media literacy, the evolution of supermarkets, health issues, hunger, cultural similarities and differences, traditions, economics agriculture, food production, law, environmental studies, cookbooks, literature, celebrations of life and death and everything in between - all these topics and many more are connected to Food and Culture.

Inspired by Hungry Planet (a book by Peter Menzel), Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution , the One Day on Earth film project, the Center for Ecoliteracy and the Edible Schoolyard, this GCCP (global, collaborative classrooms project) offers several strands from which teachers and students may choose, culminating in several products:

  • Food and Culture - the 21st Century Kids' Global Cookbook: featuring recipes from every country as well as information on each country's culture, including student art, photography and writing.

  • Food and Culture - Online Video Archive: student-created cooking shows, fitness and health videos, music videos, mini-documentaries for science, history, economics, etc.,feature-length films and more.

  • Children's Literature Database - the first global database of children's literature which will be searchable by genre, age, country, title and author.

  • Student Campus and Community Projects - upload reports, research, photos, videos and more of your students' projects such as health fairs, food festivals (Johnny Appleseed Festivals are excellent for fall in US), dinner theatres, cooking classes, cooking shows, catering and other entrepreneurial projects and more!

  • Who can participate? Students K-16 and industry experts such as chefs, videographers, artists, nutritionists, etc.

About this Project

This is not your typical pen-pal type of collaborative project. It's much more. Students will be engaged in authentic, meaningful and rigorous research focused on real-world issues from fitness, health and nutrition to cultural studies, environmental studies and social issues.
The curriculum will be aligned to the United Nations Millennium Goals, to the United States White House Issues, and to national standards for the USA. We invite additional information on alignment to standards in other countries or to programs such as International Baccalaureate.

We realize that different classrooms will have different amounts of time to devote to this project. The curriculum will be designed in such a way that not only can it be adapted to any grade level or course, but it can be implemented in a one-hour per week class, as a full-time unit for anywhere from 6 weeks to a full year, or it can be an excellent project for an After-School program!

What we do expect is authentic participation. For example, don't join and then just submit a recipe. This is NOT a recipe swap!

Get your students excited as they develop their 21st century skills utilizing a variety of technologies. You are not required to have access to all of these to participate:
